Impact of Ventilation of Balconies Design

The form of balconies is a distinct design component to reflect the local weather condition. In Taiwan, the main function of a balcony is to shade the sun and to extend internal activity space. However, the balcony form has a significant effect on ventilation within the whole building and may be a detrimental factor for occupants’ health. The study develops balcony forms’ possibility in Taiwan weather with the premise of ventilation and it is operated with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation and on-site measurement.

Numerical simulation results vary along with the difference of wind conducting panel angle set on the balcony

 

Zero Energy Building in Taiwan

In most of the case, NZEB (Net Zero Energy Building) supplies operation energy by merely sustainable energy in the use phase of its life cycle. Development of sustainable energy is utterly important for a nation’s future especially for Taiwan, which extremely depends on importing energy. Though densely populated in such a small island makes it lack of space to develop a large scope of sustainable energy plants, taking a building as a sustainable energy generating unit makes it possible to manage energy supply in Taiwan. The study applies whole year energy consumption simulation by EnergyPlus™, which is a dynamic simulation program to model energy consumption developed by DOE (Department of Energy), to assess the extent of energy consumption affected by different design strategy. Moreover, on the basis of the result, projects of architectural integrating residential NZEB are proposed while aesthetic, energy saving, and budget factors are considered.

Light Shelf for Energy Conservation

High-efficiency luminary, natural light directing, and appropriate lighting system are main methods to save energy in the trend of low carbon living style in recent years. And now a modern situation appears as the transition of working tools from paper to computer and eliminates the existing assessment of illumination of working planes, which took horizontal surface like tables as the visual targets while the present is vice versa. A similar situation happens at classrooms as students look forward to the front of a room for a rather long time. Besides of the illumination quality, the vertical working plane also makes glare of natural light from fenestrations more severe. The study targets light shelf installed with the coordination of ceiling. Besides of the design attempt to draw light deep into the building, and to reduce glare, the lab also studies the evaluation method of within sight Luminance to specify our design proposes.
